Investing in Fine Antique Persian Rugs

Monday, April 18th, 2011

More than simply beautiful decorative elements, antique Persian rugs can also be a wise investment.  Persian rugs are handmade in Iran, formerly Persia.

A fine antique rug will last more than a lifetime.  Like all antiques, the rug must be at least 100 years old to be a true antique.  Beware of “antiqued” rugs that are chemically washed to give an older appearance but are not true antique Persian rugs.

What makes antique Persian rugs expensive is as much about quality as it is about age.  Antique Persian rugs are hand-woven on a loom, which distinguishes them from modern copies that are machine made.  Weaving consists of weft, the long vertical threads, the horizontal threads called warp and the knots that make up the color and pattern of the rug.  In antique Persian rugs, the warp and weft can be wool, cotton or silk while the knots are usually made of wool. Remember, the higher the number of knots, the higher the quality of a rug.

The best wool is handspun and has a sheen or gloss to it.  Good quality wool is another factor that adds to the expense of a Persian rug. Color is traditionally achieved with vegetable dyes. Modern rugs use chemical dyes which do not have the same depth as vegetable dyes.

Ask questions and always buy from a trusted dealer. You do get what you pay for when it comes to fine antique rugs, so beware if the price seems too good to be true.  A pleasing pattern, high knot count and good quality wool will help make your Persian rug a great investment.

Magic of Custom Murals

Monday, April 18th, 2011

Custom murals can add magic to any room of your home. We all know that paint is one of the simplest ways to transform a space. With imagination and skill, simple paint can be used to create a custom mural to transport the room into another world or era.  If you are creative, you might paint the mural yourself or hire a professional mural and faux-painting expert. A custom mural can work in almost every room in the house.

Trompe l’oeil, which literally means “trick the eye” in French, is a mural technique that dates back to the Greeks and Romans. Trompe l’oeil is a painting technique that creates the illusion of three dimensions on a two dimensional wall. Trompe l’oeil became popular in the Baroque period where it was used on ceilings and walls as well as in paintings.

Custom murals in the kitchen can range from a pastoral scene to a trompe l’oeil still life of vegetables and fruit. Murals can also be used to add visual interest in a breakfast nook or dining room.

A customized mural is a wonderful way to make a nursery or child’s room feel magical. Designs are only limited by your imagination. Popular mural themes for a nursery or kid’s room include safari, garden, space, racing cars, sports, circus, princess castles, enchanted forest and underwater themes. Murals can be as complicated as an entire landscape or as simple as a single animal.

These are just a few places in the house to add a mural. Others include an entry hall or bedroom. A mural can wrap around the room or cover just one wall for a focal point.  Murals can be used in place of wallpaper as well.  All you need is your imagination and paint to create magic.

Classic Venetian Mirror Ideas for Every Room

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

Venitian Mirror | Handmade Mirror | Classical Mirror

Venetian mirrors have been popular for centuries. Named for the glass makers of Venice, principally Murano, these  mirrors are typically shaped, with two or more layers of mirror framing a central panel.  Swirls, flowers and other patterns are etched into the mirrors, adding another layer of decoration.  Glass flowers or leaves may also be applied in the corners or on the cornice.

To say that Venetian mirrors are decorative is an understatement.  A Venetian mirror adds a brilliant sparkle to any wall.  Below are some of our favorite locations in the home to hang one of these gorgeous handcrafted works of art.

Dining Room
A single Venetian mirror over a commode or a pair over matching sideboards would be wonderful for a formal dining room. Flank the mirror or mirrors with crystal sconces for additional illumination.

Entry
What a lovely way to greet your guests with a Venetian mirror over a console table.  Think about scale and ceiling height. Tall ceilings mean you can choose a tall mirror.  Place a lamp in front or to the side of the mirror to let it shine.

Powder Room & Bathroom
A large Venetian mirror works well over a vanity. A pair over a double sink vanity would be twice as nice.  A smaller mirror in a powder room either above the sink or on an adjoining wall would be lovely as well.

Great Room
Even in a less formal room, such as a great room, a Venetian mirror would be wonderful over the fireplace.  Venetian mirrors are available in such an array of styles and sizes, there is a mirror for every style and room.  Look for mirrors with less ornament for a more casual room.

Bedroom
While Venetian mirrors can handle being the focal point of any bedroom placed above a vanity, they work just as well giving a neglected corner a bit of glamour, a bit of a jewel box feeling. We love a small Venetian mirror tucked into an unexpected spot.

Choose the Perfect Crystal Chandelier

Thursday, March 17th, 2011
Crystal Chandeliers

Choosing a crystal chandelier is like finding the perfect pair of diamond earrings.  While we all know the four Cs of diamond buying, we’ve come up with the three S’s of buying a crystal chandelier:  Space, Scale and Sparkle.

Space
We can’t think of a single room where a crystal chandelier would be out of place. Crystal chandeliers look wonderful in an entry hall, grand foyer, dining room, kitchen, bedroom and living room.  We love a chandelier in a feminine dressing room or nursery as well as the more typical rooms. Think about your space and how a crystal chandelier could work to enhance your room’s design.

Scale
Once you have determined the space for a crystal chandelier, the next step is to consider scale.  A small powder room would be overwhelmed by a large chandelier.  A formal dining room would feel diminished by an undersized chandelier.  A petite crystal chandelier that mounts close to the ceiling will add whimsy to a small space.  A large room, like a formal dining room or living room, will require more of a statement piece. Be sure to take measurements before shopping.  If you are working with a professional interior designer, he or she will assist you in selecting just the right size chandelier for the space.

Sparkle
Crystal chandeliers add that je ne sais quoi to a room like jewelry does to an outfit. Choose a chandelier that has the right amount of flair for the space.  Crystal chandeliers can have crystal drops and beads in a variety of sizes, facets and shapes—just like diamonds.  The more crystals, the more sparkle. It’s simple really.  For added interest, consider a mix of color and clear crystals or rock crystal for its lightly veined appearance.

Crystal chandeliers like diamond jewelry are designed for every taste, from contemporary with sleek chrome and big drops to ornate with gilt-bronze and hundreds of round crystal strands.  Just remember the three S’s and you’ll find the perfect crystal chandelier for each room in your home.

Elements of a Divine Dressing Room

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

Every woman deserves a room of her own. Whether you already have a dressing room, are considering turning an extra room into one or adding one during a renovation it is about more than just adding additional storage space for clothes, accessories, bags and shoes.  It is creating a space where you can greet the day or end the evening in style.  Who wouldn’t love a dressing room instead of a cramped, overstuffed closet?  We’ve seen a lot of dressing rooms and have concluded that there are a few key elements to making a dressing room divine.

Dressing Room

A well designed dressing room will feel like a boutique filled with your own clothes and shoes.  Organization is key.  Storage for hanging clothes, sweaters, shoes and accessories should be considered and incorporated. We love a custom chest of drawers in a dressing room.  It not only provides drawers for storage, but a flat surface to lay out an outfit or fold sweaters. A bench or small chair provides a place to sit while putting on shoes.

Our perfect dressing room goes a little like this… It feels glamorous and chic.  Larger than a closet, more like a lounge, it has an old Hollywood feel.  A sofa provides a quiet place to sit and have morning coffee.  A well lit vanity is the ideal place to do one’s hair and makeup.  Soft colors make the room feel feminine and calm. A dressing room must have a full length mirror, a French or Italian antique would be divine.

Lighting Your Luxury Home

Monday, October 4th, 2010

Foyer ChandelierLighting in your luxury home is an aspect that often gets neglected when it’s just right.  Whether for ambiance or aesthetics or just practical purposes, it’s important to get the lighting right.  Choices on the right lighting should be as follows:

  • Choose the lighting that is right for the application: Direct or task lighting is focused in the space you are trying to work. Ambient or indirect lighting is used for ambiance and for overall lighting of a space. Once chosen you can begin to choose lighting options.  Light sets the mood and function.  Choose wisely based on the room’s application.
  • Don’t ignore the exterior: Walkways, sidewalks, perimeter of your house, and the front entry should be lit with ambient lighting.  Keeping lights too dim is a welcome hiding place for unwanted guests. Keep the lighting too bright can be costly and an eyesore in the neighborhood. Flood lights and those that are solar operated would be a great and practical alternative.
  • Integrate walls into the lighting decor: Lighting on the wall can be useful in setting mood.  Directional lighting pointing upwards or downwards can focus on architectural elements on your home, and draw attention to exterior niches and plantings around your home.
  • Inside your home use multiple light sources for one space: For the kitchen, bedrooms, and living spaces, multiple light sources will help you achieve a variety of functions and ambiance for those areas. In the kitchen, under counter lights can provide great task lighting. In the living room, opt for a floor lamp next to a couch or favorite reading chair. Bathrooms are great for lighting at the  mirror and should be free from shadows and glaring light.
  • Night light for the kids: Think about the lighting for when children sleep when planning lighting requirements.  Night lights help small children from being scared, but also help parents navigate through dark rooms.  Consider a dim wall sconce, or table lamp can be used for rocking infants to sleep.
  • In formal living and dining areas, chandeliers: In spaces that a formal chandelier is considered, choose one that will not date your space. Often time’s chandeliers are bought without thinking of the space and the décor that surrounds it.  Chandeliers come in extremely simple designs that include faux candles, small bulbs, or a few lights to the ornate and expensive crystal varieties. Whichever is your décor choice, measure out the space, and ceiling height before ordering to ensure enough head room will be available below the hanging chandelier.

Lighting will be an important aspect for adding ambiance and practicality to your home.

Choosing Kitchen Tiles

Monday, October 4th, 2010

Kitchen tilesKitchen tiles are a great place to flex your creative skills in the art of decorating.  They can be used in different applications, and they all will enhance your kitchen wonderfully.  When choosing kitchen tile for your home decide where it is going to go first.  Glossy tile that goes on a wall likely will not be the same as flooring tile. Flooring tile has to be safe to walk on, and a glossy floor kitchen tile could be unsafe to walk on, especially when wet.  Here are tips for choosing the right application and type of tile for your kitchen.

Determine where the tile will be installed: Before you select a material you will need to decide what surface the tile will be applied.  Tile can be placed as a backsplash behind a stove, or on the wall to the underside of the upper cabinets. Tile is a popular countertop material, and can also be used on the kitchen floor.

Decipher the difference between ‘tiles’: The word ‘tile’ refers to a resilient material that can be laid in rows over a surface.  For kitchens, this could include: quarry, stone, cork, vinyl, bamboo, ceramic, porcelain and glass.  Applications like vinyl, cork and bamboo tiles are most commonly used in flooring. While quarry, ceramic, and porcelain can be used for counters and floors. Glass tile is commonly reserved for walls and backsplashes.

Determine your budget before getting sold on the look: Kitchen tile can be inexpensive, such as vinyl and linoleum tiles or they can be expensive, such as custom designed ceramic tiles.  Do your homework before getting married to an envisioned look in your head! Tile and home improvement stores can help you estimate the amount of product that will be required for your kitchen.

Consider your household’s lifestyle: Although kitchen tile is resilient, it still requires up-keep and the longevity of each material differs.  For countertops, ceramic tile is durable and will hold up to heat from hot pans, and is easy to clean and maintain. Unfortunately a ceramic tile surface can be uneven and it can easily crack or chip.  Determine if your family’s lifestyle will match the tile finish you choose.

Choose a floor tile that can withstand your family’s habits: When choosing floor tile it has to be durable enough to withstand heavy traffic, pets, spilled foods and cleaning supplies.  Ensure that you purchase floor tile that is called ‘floor tile’.  If you choose a wall tile for a floor the coefficient of friction (COF) will be too low, which in turn means it’s too slippery for walking. Instead choose floor tile that has a slight raised pattern, or texture to it to allow for a safer kitchen floor. For a more refined and elegant look consider using quarry tile. The clay and limestone based tile is fired to look like natural stone. Quarry tile is more expensive than the traditional ceramic tile, but is gorgeous in the right application.

The sky is the limit for your tile backsplash: Well, to a certain point the sky is the limit. Since your backsplash doesn’t take direct heavy traffic, glossy, and painted tiles are a perfect fit for your backsplash.  Although they still have to withstand, hot oil splatters, grease and daily cleaning.  Choose from porcelain, ceramic, glass, metal or stone materials for a backsplash that can subtly or boldly bring a decorative flair to your kitchen.

Your kitchen floors, counters and backsplash have a variety of tile styles to fit your budget, and taste.  Consider these tips when choosing tile for your kitchen.  Research your tile options and then make your kitchen the one you’ve always dreamed of!

Housekeeping

Friday, September 24th, 2010

Breakfast NookHousekeeping and maid services have their pros and cons for the luxury home owner.  You are letting what is essentially a stranger in your home near all your valuables.  But with the right precautions, this can be a great alternative if you have a busy active lifestyle and often don’t get to the regular cleaning duties of the home.

Referrals: If you are concerned about the safety of your home and belongings, find reputable housekeeping services that have references for you to contact.  Ask your neighbors, colleagues or family whom they would recommend.  Similarly to a doctor, keep researching until you are comfortable with the information you gather.

Interview: Most reputable cleaning services will come out and walk through your home for a free consultation and estimate of services. Before this ask questions on the phone.  They should include: *What type of products do they use? Do they change cleaning cloths between homes? *Are they licensed and bonded in case of damage or theft to your home. *How long have they been in business? *What referrals do they have for you to call?  This can save you a lot of headache in the long run if you have particular requests.  If possible, find those that are green and eco-friendly as possible.

Individual vs Service? :  The pros for hiring an individual is the personalized attention to detail they will offer.  Individuals may offer more services such as folding clothes, and making up beds, beyond the usual cleaning.  The cons of hiring an individual include, if they become ill; there isn’t a back-up team to take their place.  Insurance and bonding amounts may not be as high for an individual.  Therefore if you had an incident in your home, they may not be covered.

The pros of hiring a service is they have a team of service people, so the likelihood of a cancellation is minimal.  A team of people working on your home at once may make them more thorough and expeditious.  The cons could include, the personalized attention may be reduced, and the time period they spend at each individual home may be less.

Do a walk-through with them: Once you’ve decided to have the housekeeping service/or individual come to your home, remember these tips as you walk through your home: Before they arrive, keep your home in the “usual” state it would be in before a cleaning job would have normally been done.  Many people make the mistake of cleaning up the home before the walk through.  This is defeating the purpose because the service will quote you a price based on the amount of work, square footage of home, and how long you need them to stay. The staff will be hired based off of this meeting, and the time estimate will be drastically different than what you really need.

Family: Ask questions that will settle your concerns and don’t be afraid to be honest and candid.  Your home, family and belongings should feel safe when allowing someone into your home.   If you later find yourself despising to clean, and spend more time cleaning than enjoying a quality lifestyle, then a housekeeping service may be for you.  While if you enjoy cleaning, and can’t stand the idea of people in your home as they clean just do it for yourself.
